Joker Director Finally Explains That Last Crucial Scene

  • Published: 09 October 2019
  • Arthur Fleck's biggest joke just might be the one he pulled on you. Joker director Todd Phillips recently made a few very interesting comments to the Los Angeles Times about the final scene of the movie comments that imply a bizarre truth about the story being presented. In case that's not warning enough, be advised that major spoilers for Joker lie ahead.

Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur is depicted early and often as having a tenuous grip on reality. The film eventually lets on that it's not always clear which events are fantasy and which are reality not to the audience, and presumably not to Arthur.

At the end, Arthur is seen with his psychiatrist in Arkham State Hospital after he has apparently killed his mother, incited a riot, shot Murray Franklin on live television, and escaped from police custody with the help of his clown-masked followers. As the shrink attempts to question him, Arthur simply laughs, telling her that she wouldn't get the joke. According to Phillips, it's this particular laugh that might hold a clue about the true nature of the story that just unfolded. He explained,

"That laugh in that scene is really the only time he laughs genuinely. There are different laughs in the movie. There is the laugh from Arthur's affliction and then there is his fake laugh when he's trying to be 'one of the people,' which is my favorite laugh. But at the end, when he's in the room at Arkham State Hospital, that's his only genuine laugh in the movie."

Why is that, exactly? Well, perhaps because in the end, the joke is on us, the audience. Phillips has said that one of the main influences on his film was The Killing Joke, the acclaimed 1988 graphic novel in which the Joker says that if he must have a past, he, quote, "[prefers] it to be multiple choice." The director made a direct allusion to this dialogue in suggesting that as many fans have speculated Arthur Fleck might not necessarily be who we think he is. Phillips said,

"There are lots of ways you could look at this movie. You could look at it and go, 'This is just one of his multiple-choice stories. None of it happened.' I don't want to say what it is. But a lot of people I've shown it to have said, 'Oh, I get it he's just made up a story. The whole movie is the joke. It's this thing this guy in Arkham Asylum concocted. He might not even be the Joker.'"

Phillips went on to state outright that the man who will become Batman's nemesis may simply be in the background somewhere, watching all of these events play out. He said,

"Maybe Joaquin's character inspired the Joker. You don't really know. His last line in the movie is, 'You wouldn't get it.' There's a lot going on in there that's interesting."

Phoenix himself also explained that Joker can be seen not so much as a straightforward narrative, but as a series of suggestions. Keep watching the video to see that the Joker director finally explains that last crucial scene!

How much of Joker do you think really happened in the movie? Which parts?

@Joseph Bernard interesting points. Anyhow, Arthur would not make sense as Batman's nemesis.

@Paranoid0147 good points but if the riots didn't happen, then Thomas and Martha Wayne weren't killed, and Bruce wasn't orphaned. Arthur had to inspire the riots and they had to really happen.

Looper people how dense are you. The final scene with the bloody footprints gives it away. He incited the violence and chaos. All may not be true but his actions truly inspired THE joker who will walk on his bloody footsteps, thus creating the comic persona we know.
Do they teach no literature in murica?Everything was a dream is a bad cliche and I hope from the bottom of my heart they aren't illiterate enough to pull that kind of bullshit

I noticed something interesting. As far as I am aware, the true killer clown never introduced himself as just Joker. He always was THE Joker. I think that Arthur is not the one.

I kinda of think that if the director/cast directly tells us how to interpret it, it defeats the purpose. If there is a sequel then we will have a better idea of what was real vs fake. Until then, all this speculation is interesting because they included support for many conspiracy theories

Really? I though when he said "you wouldn't get it" in the end scene, he was thinking about the irony of Wayne's parents being killed by people wearing clown's masks, as Tomas Wayne was the one who called working class people "clowns" after joker killed those guys in the subway.
It doesnt matter at the end of the day if this Joker was a real story or a made up story, at the end of the day- it's all just a story anyway, its content is what counts.

The movie was 10/11 for me. But that las lt scene was.... meh. I hope it doesn't means that the whole story happened in Arthur's head. I love twists, but this would only kill the whole story which was - for me - perfect. The scene where Arthurt became the leader of the rebelleion, where he became Joker and the chaos itself - that should've been the perfect ending. We didn't need the last 3 minutes even if it was a hint for the (later) Batman movies or wanted to be another twist.
However, this is the best film I've ever seen and I hope it will get an Oscar. This movie is too dark (and real) for any movie of the Marvel universe, but is also so much better 😂😅

It’s a joker movie based on a character that has no real 100% true backstory that’s why they did that in this movie because in the comics it’s always been like that even In the dark knight heath ledger is always changing up his story as to how he got his scars. You can tell who the casual fans are thinking that they were going to get a clear cut origin of the joker lol

In the “The Killing Joke” Arthur Fleck actually becomes the Joker, so if the movie was highly influenced by the graphic novel, then I assume that in the movie Arthur Fleck is the authentic Joker too.

My theory is: All that happens in the movie is real (except of course his relationship with his neighbour). The Last Scene happens way after the timeline of the movie. After the whole protests, he gets arrested and his put in Arkham hospital. This would explain why it looks like there is a huge age gap between Bruce Wayne and him, when in reality, who knows, maybe the whole storyline in the movie happened in his twenties.

It doesn't matter what happened and what didn't. The idea of the Joker is predicated on a movement. A rebellion of sorts. All of the sequences may have been exaggerated, or not. But Jokers story carries on right to the next person who takes on the Joker persona. He speaks for the forgotten, the looked over, the unwanted and uses violence to make people see them again.

I don’t like the idea at all that Arthur is the inspiration for the future joker, however the idea that he made it all/elements of it up makes perfect sense in my eyes.

The joker is renowned for being of such a high intellect (which Arthur isn’t particularly), so it wouldn’t surprise me at all if the joker in the final scene is just making this story up as a way of toying with the interviewer or psychiatrist or whatever she is. Also, every single time Arthur killed in the past it was for a reason, whereas the implied final kill in Arkham would have just been killing for the sake of it - a very joker thing to do.
We also know that the joker has no origin story and Arthur fleck is not a name that has ever been mentioned in the past in comics, so again it makes sense to me that this isn’t a genuine back story and is something which he has just created as it would seem feasible to a psychiatrist that this is why he became the joker.

What would be the point about telling the story of the Joker that turns out not to be the Joker!? I believe the idea behind all this is leave it to our imagination due that the joker is crazy and as any other person with a psychological issue, we won’t be able to understand him fully or see what’s the true intention behind his actions. At the end we have to came up with our own explanation of what happened. We can believe whatever we want to believe. It would be really stupid that the story ends up being about a random guy

I think he was intended to be the real joker. My interpretation was that this was a troubled person that had a heart. He took care of his Mom and he wasn’t vengeful at first. Eventually he gave in and he became The Joker when he decided that his problems were the same thing as his identity. In other words, he was just a sad guy that never found any answers in his life.

I am not going to watch this travesti!!!

DC and WB’s has screwed up again. They made a compelling film, but now trying to make it some deep, mental, “Matrix” thing. Oh not to mention the Director just ruined the idea or hopeful promise that this AWESOME Joker incarnation will never meet The Batman. They are so dumb.
