I live in Ireland, and to me a Cadillac the older ones always was the icon so to speak of America, I don't think they should have made them anyway European because America and big Cadillacs was what it was all about, for me anyway. Well I definitely agree with the abs and the double overhead cam I'm talking about the Look

My 99s Seville I've been almost 10 years.
          With over 280.000km run.
I drove 180.000km with it myself.
And in Germany where you like to drive over 200kmh
So far only minor things had to be repaired, only the cylinder head gasket was an expensive affair.

Already had so many cars German and American, but none was as good as the Seville!

Looks like it was in an accident and the seat belts were never replaced. Normally it's just the driver side, but hardly both of them.

Cool story, I share a very similar story with my Grandpa's Cadillac, only his was a 1999 Sedan DeVille. One particular trip with my Grandpa at the wheel, my Mom, Sister, Grandma and I were just leaving Denver, climbing west up a long hill in the late July summer heat, when all of a sudden the car lost power and began to ding frantically. He looked down and saw the engine was overheated and gauge displayed 240F. I was 15 at the time and was sitting in the front seat watching the smoke rolling out the cowl behind the hood. We pulled over and what felt like 5 minutes had passed, a nice guy in a ram 2500 (this was 12 years ago, I remember important details) stopped and offered to go to walmart to bring back some water. We were 1000 miles from home and knowing what the fate of the northstar is now, it was looking like our trip had just gone horribly wrong. Let me tell you, ignorance is bliss. He let it cool down, topped off the coolant and continued about 1500 miles to complete our summer vacation. My Grandpa had the car until 2010 when he purchased a brand new DTS to replace the DeVille that had almost 250k miles on the original coolant pump, starter, head gaskets, alternator, you name it. When I read how problematic these engines were as I grew older, I couldn't believe it, because he must've had the best one in the world!

Edit: I do remember the sending unit in the fuel tank went bad, so he would reset the trip and fill every 300 miles, but as far as I know, it was mechanically very reliable over its entire life.

N* are a joke, had a '02 sts and blew heads in under 10k (purchased with 60k). I'll take the 4.9 in the '94-'95 Devilles or the LT1 in the '94-'96 Fleetwoods over N* any day. Cadillac has killed their brand, I love the old boats and Ldogs but '96 was the beginning of the end, quit making Fleetwoods to make space for SUV and started putting N* in all Devilles.

My grandparents had 1995, 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2005 Cadillac STS’s and then they got a 2007 DTS, 2011 CTS Coupe and 2015 ATS. My grandma has passed and my grandpa gave up his licence, but their Cadillac dealership loved them for a long time!

The engine blowing randomly is shameful. I cant even look at modern Cadillacs because all I see are reskined chevys. Its sad that the more classy era of cars died out.

Not only did the head gasket blow but they had a lot of electronic issues as well. But as far as the head bolts go, they actually go bad because they corrode and then fail. I was told by a relative that worked for GM in the 80s and 90s that the issue with the bolts were that GM used the wrong steel to make them. The steel that they used did not hold up well to the engine coolant especially if the owner didn't change the coolant every 20k. The bolt threads would corrode and then strip and then white smoke everywhere. I have a co-worker that has a guy in Pennsylvania that will fix everything on your north-star for 2700. Head gaskets, oil leaks and all other seals.

It's 50 miles with no coolant in camel mode not 100. The Northstar remains as Cadillacs most technically advanced motors. 216 is NOWHERE near overheating. Stop worrying.

Re: Are all 4.6 North Star engins subject to head gasket problems?

all 2005 and newer N* have a coarser thread pitch to the headbolts and the only hg problems we've seen on them are the same type you would see on any other engine

some (or maybe many) 2004 have this same upgraded design but the only way to tell is by taking off the cam covers to get access to the headbolts to measure them

so 2005+ is the safest bet and 2004 if you're a gambler who likes to play safe bets and 2003- if you like the idea of possibly having to stud your engine
