Just a note for all the A10 warthog is a Canadian variant as the US military doesn't name vehicles after animals only canada and germany do this naming scheme. Now the A10 thats different that is a US plane, A10 warthog again is the canadian version

What a Hypocrisy. When talking about the VTOL you seems to faild to mention the Yakovlev Yak-141 which made its first flight in 9 March 1987. From Yakovlev Yak-141, F-35B VTOL technology was borrowed ( or say purchased ). Its a Russian engineering which first proved that concept and LM just brought that tech from Yakovlev and made the F-35B possible. In-fact the X-32 was a original US design which lost against the Russian Yakovlev Yak-141 design.

You tuber "Curious Droid" nicely covered Yakovlev Yak-141 giving detail information about the project in his video "What Happened to the Soviet Supersonic Jump Jets?". @Real Engineering you must need to see that and appreciate the afford by other country as well.

What lock? The story went, they fed in trajectory manually off of tertiary data being fed to them from their computers, that was insufficient for a lock.

16:36 Seems more likely the Serbs sold it to the Chinese: "On May 7, 1999, during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, five US Joint Direct Attack Munition guided bombs hit the People's Republic of China embassy in the Belgrade district of New Belgrade, killing three Chinese journalists and outraging the Chinese public. According to the U.S. government, the intention had been to bomb the nearby Yugoslav Federal Directorate for Supply and Procurement. President Bill Clinton later apologized for the bombing, stating it was accidental. Central Intelligence Agency director George Tenet testified before a congressional committee that the bombing was the only one in the campaign organized and directed by his agency..."

NO! Not $115mn, more like a $122+ million-cost right off the assembly line and that's BEFORE it is loaded up with fuel, equipment and ordnance! It is in a half-billion-dollar project today, that may be in the trillions before it is through! But we need it, we were behind the $25 million Russian-built MiG for too long, now we can be superior again. We've come a long ways since earlier wars. Super-power countries are ALWAYS striving to be ahead of the foes, so now we're up against the Russian Su-35 and others. We must keep on top of the game and, unfortunately, that costs the big bucks!

A jack of all trades that fails to be a master of anything(other than being the most expensive). No, it won’t be worth the money. The money would be better spent on upgrading current airframes, not building a new aircraft that doesn’t have the capability to effectively replace any of the current aircraft.

The F35 is only worth the cost for each nation that buys it if they can afford enought to do the job. The engineering aviation cascade of WW2 made more leaps into the future than mistakes but sound design is never improved by taking a quarter of a century to gestate in a political placenta, while serious development starts with experience in use. The 21st century has a new environment for old threats. Yamamoto and Osama Bin Laden both recognised the size of the USA powerhouse and, whatever the rhetoric, the world remembers the outcome of trying to bloody uncle Sam's nose. The F35 is another precision sledge hammer to bolster an image of the USA that is useful in fending off world war3. However, it is more than ironic that the biggest threat is a bright blue sky combined with an opposition that chose a get 5 for the price of one offer. Do not forget the Sherman Tank. It was no match for the German Tiger but there was always one or more there when needed.

For the Air Force and Marines that may not be such a fatal flaw, but to the Navy it's huge. Only one engine means if anything damages the engine to the point of failure such as battle damage or a critical part failure over the ocean the pilot's fucked.

                                                                      • Jeb Broham

This is especially true considering the fact that the military wants it to be capable of doing EVERYTHING from fighter bomber to superiority fighter expected to dogfight with the best Russian and Chinese fighters and come out on top against twin engine jets. That demand is going to put a lot of unnecessary stress and wear on the airframe, which shortens the service life. That being said, I firmly believe that Lockheed Martin produces quality in their designs and they've been doing it for almost a century now, but in this case I just find it to be a lack of foresight towards future aerial combat. Yeah it's stealthy, relatively aerodynamic, and fast with the ability to carry an amazing variety of internally stored ordinance, but the engine is massive and presents a fairly large target that to a well experienced pilot wouldn't be hard to hit.

                                                                      • Nathan Peterson

These reports often leave out the fact that the F35 in the simulated dogfight test against an F16 in 2016 was impaired by the fact that its performance envelope was still software limited. It was not going to manuever at anywhere near its full capability because they test the aircraft and then increase its manuevering envelope again and then its gets better with time. Why is this fact always left out? Of course a test aircraft whose systems were not anywhere near fully functional and whose manuevering envelope was being greatly limited on purpose (full capability being expanded with time as the aircraft is tested) is not going to come close to an F16 or F15. The aircraft was test example only and not a fully combat capable aircraft (including manueverability). The recent versions of the F35 (with later block software F and then I) does not have this problem and is close to the capability of an F16 in manuevering. I am not even a conservative but rather a liberal but I still get tired of the press and the agenda of people on both sides who leave out important facts to suit their agenda. I do have concerns with the costs though which ballooned way out of control and beyond what it should have. Now that the aircraft is ready (almost completely) there is no point in going back to start over unless you want to spend even more money?
